I’m not normally the type to go digging through someone else’s trash. But it’s hard to ignore perfectly good, enormous jars sitting right next to the door at Five Guys.
My son is an artist. He may only be six years old but he thinks he ranks up there with Picasso and Degas. So every visit to the craft store is like stepping into a wonderland for him. Needless to say, we have way too many art supplies. For years I allowed them to pile up everywhere. Until I finally came up with a system that works.
During the past two years, I have made a commitment to making as many homemade pantry staples as possible. Before I had kids, I never even imagined that I could make my own salad dressing or pancake mix. But it turns out it is actually really easy!

I spent a lot of time in the hospital when I was pregnant because I was suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. During those brief hospital stays, my son was bored out of his mind. He was fortunate to be able to play with an iPad. But after explaining to him that most kids in the hospital don’t have iPads, he wondered what they do to keep busy.
My baby girl is six months old, and just the right age to start solid foods. With this milestone comes the question, pre-made or homemade? Most pre-made baby food comes in plastic containers or pouches, even the organic foods (which is a mystery to me). Conventional, non-organic baby food can include pesticides, GMOs and additives. Organic baby food in glass jars is definitely the best option as far as store-bought food goes. Homemade is the only choice for me.

We are lucky enough to live on a property with plenty of room for a large organic garden. Between the bugs, disease and deer, our garden has been a lot of work! And with a new baby, I wasn’t even going to attempt to try to grow late season crops. As a result, we have been missing out on our daily dose of local produce.
Since cold frames and root cellars are not on the agenda for us, we turned to the next best thing . . . a CSA share! For Good Deed #7, I signed up for a winter produce share.
One of the (many) fun parts of having a newborn is setting up a nursery. Choosing just the right paint color, furniture and decorations seems to be somehow linked with inspiring sweet dreams in your new baby. Many parents spend months trying to decide whether to nurture an aspiring astronaut, a forest ranger or a ballerina. Often, the last thing parents consider is the level of toxins in the nursery.

Have you seen the latest commercial for Bounty paper towels? A little girl reaches for a washcloth to clean up a spill, and her mother grabs it from her, appalled that she would want to use a dirty old dish rag. Bounty’s new campaign claims it is “time to ditch that germy dishcloth.”
I have seen this commercial quite a few times because we use Hulu for our tv watching and they tend to replay commercials. And every time I see it, I grit my teeth.
Our 6th Good Deed is influenced by the spirit of Valentine’s Day. Monster and I decided to write love notes to our friends and family. I cut out little strips of paper, and Monster wrote a person’s name on one side. On the other side, I wrote (and Monster dictated) one or two things that he loves about that person.

I’m getting ready to turn 36 and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I want to be one of those women who ages gracefully. I want to say that I feel better than I ever have in my life – more confident, more secure, wiser. But the truth is that I’m not one of those women. On a daily basis, I still feel like I don’t have a clue. And on that note, here is a bit about what has been going on this past week.
Monster came up with the idea for Good Deed #5, and I am so very proud of him for thinking of it. He decided to write little notes and make up games and gifts to stick inside of library books for the next child who decides to check them out.

While pregnant, I scoured Google Images and Pinterest for inspiration for the perfect mobile. I was sure of one thing – that I wanted to make it myself so that my little girl would have something to treasure and hand down to her children. Since we co-sleep, I didn’t see the purpose of trying to set up a nursery so the mobile didn’t really have to fit a theme. I just wanted something beautiful that inspired sweet dreams and happy feelings. We live on the outskirts of the Blue Ridge Mountains and often see hot air balloons gliding calmly through the sky. And so the seed had been planted.

I love reading magazines. They are a fantastic resource for craft ideas, recipes, parenting tips, fun things to do and more. But every month I used to end up with a grocery bag full of magazines.
Rather than toss them in the garbage, I would try to pass them along to someone else. I would post them on Freecycle, Craigslist and local Yahoo parents group. I would offer them to friends and family. But usually I had very few takers.
So I found a new solution . . . Zinio.
